My dear friends, it is time to read some more Aussie stories. It has gotten a bit quiet from my side, since I don’t mean to bother you with my monotonous everyday life ;) Whereas some might also not enjoy reading about how many awesome waves I catch every morning, hehe. Well, not quite … We do get heavy storms and flat days that prevent me going in the water but those days can be counted with a single hand^^ Anyways, even for the stormy days, there is an alternative spot which you will see in the following picturesque walk through Newcastle. I thought it is about time to introduce you to this awesome place which I came to like quite a lot. We will start in Merewether in the south of Newcastle, which is where I live and move up the coast towards the central business district and the harbor entrance. After that, a short ex-course further up north towards Ana Bay. If the occasion arises, I’ll throw in a little story or two to keep the spirits up ;)

Merewether "The swell"

Merewether’s “The swell” - a little café that marks the southern point. The wave in front brakes over reef and is called most appropriately “The ladies”. That’s not surprising at all because when it’s ‘on’ the ladies come from everywhere to check out the surfers^^. Definitely one of the better waves and holds the most size (see below).

The King Edward park on top of cooks hill. This is one of the rare places where drinking in public is actually allowed (very rare!). Nice area for a little walk along the cliff and hosts a former defense bunker. A lot of weddings are being held at a little chapel in the back and the gardens facing the ocean. I can kind of understand why :)

The view over whole Newcastle is so awesome from this point – either day or night. :) There is also a little coffee shop, down there at the beach which sells really good coffee. Aussies are crazy about their coffee and especially the quality^^ Though, I must say that the European coffee fan might not at first notice the subtle difference between a so called flat white (espresso, milk + foam, served in a coffee cup) a late (espresso, milk + foam, served in a glass) and a cappuccino (espresso, milk + foam, served in a coffee cup, schoko powder on top!) :-)) haha

Yeah, Nobbys Beach. The smallest of the surf spots in terms of wave height under the general south swell. BUT, it has beachvolleyball nets! Unfortunately, its always pretty windy when we play because nobody wants to get up early, tzz ;) 

Rumors say that a couple years back or so, a whale that was stranded has been buried at Nobbys beach because they didn’t know where else to put it^^ I tried digging for it but couldn’t find anything, haha. (That was a joke^^)

The entrance to the harbor, which itself is a crazy spot like I said earlier. When the swell is huge from the south and winds are so strong from the south that nothing else can be surfed, this wave starts to break inside the harbor (happened only two times since I am here).

Such a crazy wave but see yourself. ;-) I didn’t surf it yet, because there are supposed to be all kinds of things underneath like iron poles, bicycles, cars and crap alike. Not really fond of hitting any of that stuff! It’s also pretty impressive when the big tankers are moving in. They will have to be towed by sometimes three other ships because the currents are so strong especially when the swell is large.

Another nice look out place - a tower along the promenade which has been built for the queen’s birthday (locals have a very anatomical name for this one (tower <--> male^^ ). Wonder why... From here you have an awesome view across Newcastle and the harbor as well as onto Newcastle's Christ Church Cathedral on the other side.

Massive Coal digger

On our way out of town and up north we'll pass massive machines loading and unloading coal ships. Then It goes over a huge bridge spanning hunter river and we are heading along Stockton beach which is one of the largest dune/beach systems in Australia I think. It stretches almost 40km from Newcastle to Ana Bay. I took my little 4wd jeep on it which was such a blast and pretty scary at the same time.

The problem was that the 4wd wasn’t actually working because the front hubs weren’t locking. lol :)  results: I got bogged at least 4 times^^ Luckily, Aussies love hauling over the beach in their massive 4x4's and so there was always one near to help me out :)

1 Mile Beach

The last stop is one mile beach, a nice little bay just before Port Stephens. Very quite and sheltered, barbeque places around and also an option when the swell is huge from the south. Its about an hour drive up north from Newcastle but always worth a day trip!

Mein Haus, mein Jeep, mein Strand :)

Hehe, das wird ein lustiger post jetzt. Der erste Monat ist schon rum und man kann sagen ich hab mich sehr gut eingelebt. Die erste Woche musste ich noch im Hostel verweilen, weil ich keine gute Wohnung gefunden habe. Der Plan war zunaechst der Bequemlichkeit halber eine Wohnung in der der Naehe der Uni zu nehmen. Nach zahlreichen Besichtigungen wurde dieser aber direkt wieder verworfen. Die Zimmer waren teilweise so verranzt und mit komischen Leuten besetzt, das haette sicherlich keinen Spass gemacht. Also direkt zu Plan B, eine Wohnung am Strand^^
Nachdem ich mir ein paar angeschaut hab, ist auch direkt die optimale Wohnung aufgetaucht - ein Traum. Die Zusage liess auch nicht allzu lange auf sich warten und so hab ich am 05.07.2012 meine neue Residenz bezogen. Standort: Merewether, gefuehlte 200m vom Strand. :) Ich hab ein relativ kleines Zimmer unterm Dach, dafuer haben wir ein riesiges Wohnzimmer mit offener Kueche (Gasherd, check^^) und Terasse.

Surf at the crack of dawn, its pumping :)

Meine Mitbewohner sind lustigerweise ein Hamburger, der schon seit ueber einem Jahr hier lebt (das Surfen liebt) und eine Australierin. Gesprochen wird nur englisch daheim, der Hamburger kann eh kein anstaendiges deutsch mehr. ;) Ab sofort galt folgender Tagesablauf: 06:00 Uhr aufstehen, -verdammt ist es kalt, wir schalten unsere Heizung naemlich nicht an- hineingeschluepft in den noch kaelteren, nassen Neo und in 2 Minuten zum Strand vorgejoggt. So langsam kann man auch was sehen, first light 06:20 Uhr. Kurz die Wellen begutachtet und schon kommen die anderen verrueckten Surfer, also schnell rauspaddeln.
Sonnenaufgang gegen 06:50 Uhr, endlich wirds ein bisschen waermer, wobei man davon eh nichts mehr merkt. Viel zu stoked von den ersten Wellen. 07:30 Uhr, schnelle eine letzte Welle rausnehmen und zurueck joggen, duschen, fruehstueck reinspachteln und ab in den Bus zur Uni. Tollerweise faehrt der direkt vor der Haustuer, braucht allerdings auch 45 Minuten und faehrt nur einmal in der Stunde^^ Nicht so schlimm, so laesst es sich schon ein paar Wochen leben.
In der Uni sitzt ich mit ein paar anderen postgrad Studenten in einem eigenen Raum, sehr gemutlich.

Hier fuehl ich mich jetzt schon zu Hause! :)

Die Kaffeekultur ist leider nicht mit der heimatlichen vergleichbar, also musste erstmal eine Espressomaschine direkt auf den Schreibtisch :) Ansonsten laeufts gut, erstmal wieder viel lesen und versuchen alles zu verstehen. Einmal pro Woche gibt es einen Vortrag von jemanden aus dem Team und alle sind eigentlich sehr freundlich. Was ich eigentlich genau mache, versuch ich mal in einem seperaten post zu erklaeren, es ist aufjedenfall ziemlich verrueckt ;) Vielleicht entdeckt mich der eine oder andere auch hier: http://mechatronics.newcastle.edu.au/lab/content/People/
Dann galt es das naechste Ziel ins Auge zu nehmen, ein fahrbarer Untersatz ist in Australien einfach sowas von notwendig, die oeffentlichen Verkehrsmittel kann man teilweise vergessen. Also wieder die gute alte gumtree Seite gescant und nach Autos geschaut. Das Ziel war ein kleiner 4x4 Jeep und nach ein paar miserablen Angeboten, hab ich ein super Deal naehe Sydney gespottet und bin gleich hin. Und heraus kam ein... Suzuki Vitara 1997 4x4 with softtop :)

 die Bilder sprechen fuer sich! Im Sommer wird das Verdeck abgenommen und oben ohne gefahren!! Yeah! Fuer den Preis hab ich dann auch direkt zugeschlagen, war auch noch in super Zustand. Zusaetzlich ist auch noch eine super Freundschaft mit dem Verkaeufer rausgesprungen, die haben mich gleich mal zu brasilianischem bbq eingeladen, da sag ich natuerlich nicht nein :)

Rundum hab ich mir da sicherlich nen kleinen Traum erfuellt: Wellen direkt vor der Tuer, wenns mal weiter weg soll wird mim Jeep aufm Strand gefahren (hab ich aber noch nicht ausprobiert^^) und Arbeit laeuft auch top.:) Der Winter setzt einem des Naechtens meistens noch etwas zu weil es ohne Heizung schon echt kalt ist. Im Moment jedoch ist schoenster Sonnenschein, genau richtig fuers Wochenende, Wind weht offshore und surf is pumping! Hehe! Machts gut! Cheeeers

Newcastle - da bin ich :)

So, es kam natürtlich wie es kommen musste. Gepäckannahme beim oversize Gepäckstand... und ... keine boards :( Mein Rucksack kam an, aber der letzte Container hatte wahrscheinlich das ganze fragile Gepäck geladen und das hat es nicht bis nach Sydney geschafft. Also ohne die boards mim Zug nach Newcastle gedackelt, war super entspannt sag ich euch. 3 Stunden gemütlich durch schöne Täller und an Flüssen entlang. Wenn jetzt heute meine guten Stücke noch heil bis vor die Haustür geliefert werden, bin ich sogar heilfroh, dass ich sie nicht selber bis hier her schleppen musste^^.

In Newcastle angekommen, wurde ich direkt abgeholt und ab gings ins Hostel. Ansonsten hab ich grad noch so einen kleinen Spaziergang durch die Nachbarschaft, zwei Bierchen und ein freies Abendessen im pub nebenan geschafft, als es mich auch schon umgehaun hat.

Neuer Tag, neues Glück aber eig. hätte ich den gern mit einem Sieg gegen die Itacker gestartet - scheise mit der scheise. Kopf hoch Leute! Ich werd mich jetzt mal um die Wohnungssuche bemühen. Greetz

Blog is Alive Again - Back to SG

First stop Singapore, here I am again. Feels good to be back. I nearly slept throughout the whole flight, had two good meals and arrived at decent 30 degrees and 89% humidity. God, I missed it^^ I directly had to go for Laksa and Te Peng, what else :) Sweated half to death, but feel very much alive. 

Boarding for Sydney is starting now, so I need to hop on. I might have to face the issue of not having any luggage in sydney cos on the flight they announced they had to leave one container behind since they weren't able to fulfill some airport requirements. Damn these guys, if anything happens to my boards I am going to kill some people ... with a tray. haha :-D

Anyways, that might mean I dont have to carry them all the way to Newcastle, we will see. So far, Cheers

Leider hat auch der größte Spaß irgendwann sein Ende und man soll ja aufhören wenn es am schönsten ist. Wir hätten noch ein paar Wochen mehr gebraucht um das Stückchen zwischen Newcastle und Sydney, die Central Coast, die vollgepackt mit guten Spots ist, richtig auskosten zu können. So aber haben wir in Newcastle nur kurz angehalten und gestaunt, denn der berühmte Spot Merewether war total außer Rand und Band und leider eben auch viel zu heftig und sind dann weiter die Küste runtergefahren. Ist eine Hammer Strecke, denn es geht direkt Zwischen Seen zur Rechten und dem Ozean zur linken entlang.

Gesurft und genächtigt haben wir dann ganz am Ende bei Avoca, war aber eher mittelmäßig. Dann ging’s auch schon weiter in die Einzugsgebiete von Sydney und wir haben noch einen Tag in Manly verbracht, die letzte Surf Bastion vor Sydney. Vom Northhead aus konnte man dann auch schon eine sagenhafte Aussicht auf Sydney genießen. Bei unserer kleinen Wanderung ums Kapp herum haben wir auch zufällig einen alten Verteidigungsbunker entdeckt :) Prinzipiell ist sind die beiden Headlands um den Eingang zum Hafen von Sydney voller alter Verteidigungsanlagen, echt cool!

In Sydney haben wir uns dann mit unserer coolen Socke Vicky (nach Bali, Surfers und Byron jetzt in Sydney) getroffen und bei ihr im Haus (!) genächtigt. Fast schon eine kleine Villa, die sie und ihre Mates (Hammertypen auch!) da haben. Leisten können sie sich es auch nur, weil sie ein paar Räume an lustige Yogakurse vermieten. Lage ist auch Hammer, in 10 Minuten ist man bergab am berühmten Bondi Beach. Ja, dann blieb uns noch eine letzte Partynacht bei reichlich Bier und einer inspirierenden Begegnung mit einem Aussie und Pool Ex-Nationalspieler und dann hieß es auch schon Abschied nehmen von meinem treuen Begleiter dem Raikiboy. Das letzte Abenteuer in Oz wird mit meiner Family ausgefochten, die aus Neuseeland und Deutschland angereist kamen :)
